OUT OF THE BLUE:
Suddenly a coastal farm on the Bass Cooast is the new battle line in Austrlaian water politics.
By 2011 Australian cities will source more than 25% of their fresh water from desalination plants. Famously described by NSW premier Bob Carr as ‘bottled electricity’, seawater desalination is typically adopted as a last resort. From 2005 Australian state governments started building them before cheaper, cleaner options had been exhausted. This strategy became contraversial in Victoria when in 2007 storages hit 30%, and the world's largest reverse osmosis desal plant was planned for the Bass Coast, 100 Kms South East of the city.
Out of the Blue, a 30 minute documentary describes what happened next as defiant rural communities came head to head with a determined proponent.
